Meet Lorrel

As the mom of a third generation Piedmont family, I care deeply about our city and the issues that face our community. I’d like to think that one day, one of my kids might come back to raise a family here, too, and I’d like to leave Piedmont better than I found it. A tall order, I know!

I'm running for City Council to continue to make a difference in my community, a commitment I've had since moving to Piedmont and long before.

My husband, Mike, and I moved to Piedmont when our children were toddlers. Mike grew up here and we bought his childhood home, fixed it up, and are still happily raising our kids here 13 years later.

I am a US Army veteran and was deployed to Turkey where I led a joint Army and Air Force communications team that supported the mission of enforcing the no-fly zone over Iraq during Operation Provide Comfort. I’m a former patent attorney, a data scientist, and I own a small company that provides data science and technology assistance to small businesses and non-profits. I also serve as an active Director on the board of the League of Women Voters of California supporting the mission of “empowering voters and defending democracy.” We are a governance board that makes decisions about the direction of the organization in conjunction with the staff in a structure that is very similar to that of city government.

I earned a bachelor’s degree from Mount Holyoke College, a JD from Boston College Law School, and a Master of Information and Data Science degree from U.C. Berkeley.

When my kids started preschool at Piedmont Play School, I was introduced to the strong volunteer culture of Piedmont. I volunteered in the classroom - as required by the co-op model - with fellow parents. I loved rolling up my sleeves and have continued to support our schools and community with my talent, time and resources. I have served on the Piedmont Playschool board, served on the Wildwood Parents’ Club board, served as a room parent, regularly helped in my kids’ classrooms, served lunch to Wildwood students, led cub scouts meetings, led classrooms in making scarecrows for the Harvest Festival, hosted moms’ night out cocktail parties, led our annual Wildwood class camping trips, contributed goods and services to fundraisers (gingerbread houses and Spring Fling cakes!).

After the 2016 election, I felt called to broaden my involvement, so I joined the board of the League of Women Voters of Piedmont (LWVP) where I advocated locally for issues like addressing our local housing shortage, Title IX compliance, school resource officers and more. I most recently served as the president of LWVP for four years where I increased our reach and in addition to advocacy, provided voter education materials, programs, and discussions groups for Piedmont and beyond.

As the mom of a third generation Piedmont family, I care deeply about our city and the issues that face our community. I’d like to think that one day, one of my kids might come back to raise a family here, too, and I’d like to leave Piedmont better than I found it. A tall order, I know!

As a business owner and in my work in the nonprofit sector, I have a history of thinking strategically, identifying innovative solutions, and pushing against the status quo. I think critically about whether the current way of doing business is effective. If it is, great! If not, let’s do something to change it! I have an analytical and data hungry mind. I make decisions with common sense and ethics at the forefront.

I would be honored to have your vote for Piedmont City Council.
